Principal's Message

Aloha and welcome to Honāunau Elementary, home of our South Kona keiki.
Nestled on the slopes of Mauna Loa, our campus is a close-knit, family-oriented community where culture, care, and strong academics come together. Having served South Kona families for nearly 15 years as a Special Education teacher, SSC, Vice Principal, and District Specialist, I am deeply committed to ensuring every child on our campus gets the support, challenge, and foundation they need to thrive.
In all that we do, we are guided by our school motto, Hoʻomohala ʻIke, Kūliʻa I Kūpono, developing knowledge and striving for excellence. Bringing a background as both an educator and a collegiate athlete and coach, my leadership approach centers on teamwork, grit, and putting student needs first. We live this out daily by holding ourselves to high standards while grounding our campus interactions in our 4 B’s: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe, and Be Kind.
Great schools are built on strong partnerships between home, school, and community. Whether you are a lifelong South Kona resident or new to our ʻohana, thank you for partnering with us to help our keiki reach their highest potential.
Mahalo,
Joseph Gross
